Sally Fallon Morell replies: NO, NO, NO, do not use pasteurized milk. It is very allergenic, difficult to digest and the nutrients are far less available. Thank goodness you have a source of raw milk! It is the safest thing for your baby.

However, I have been feeling really uneasy about it. Can I use pasteurized milk with the added ingredients to make the formula so she is still getting the nutrients form the vitamins and minerals? Why do I need raw milk? I know it is considered to be a healthier option as pasteurization kills the good bacteria. But what would be my next choice if I don’t feel safe giving her the raw milk?

Sally Fallon Morell responds: I’d keep the cow for now, especially if she is doing well otherwise. Have not heard of red spots before but since it is not anything serious, I’d continue as you are. Hopefully they will go away.

We started the raw cow formula and she loves (no gas or colic) but after eating formula she got a couple red spots around her mouth. Is this normal? We were doing 1/2 breastmilk 1/2 Raw cow formula. Should we switch to Goat or keep with cow?

Sally Fallon Morell responds: If the baby is robust and doing well, yes you can go to raw milk by itself. Give cod liver oil in the raw milk, or separately using an eye dropper or a syringe.

My baby is 9 months. If she’s old enough to not need the formula, can I give her raw cow’s milk by itself? Would I add cod liver oil to it? If so, how much?

Can you tell us which formula recipe you are talking about? None of the formulas listed use wheat (unless you meant whey, but even so, let us know).

I use coconut milk instead and skip the wheat. Do you have any ideas for protien substitutes? I’ve nursed my babies until they are 1, but when switching to cows milk they don’t seem to tolerate it well. I like using this hearty formula to aid in their development even though they are eating other foods as well.

Sally Fallon Morell responds: At nine months, you do not have to do the formula. But be aware that goat milk can be constipating. You might try raw cows milk to see whether that makes a difference. Of course, she should also be getting solid food, especially pureed poultry liver and egg yolks. Best if you purchase your liver and eggs from a pasture-based farm.

I have a 9 month old that I have been exclusively breastfeeding, we are both just tired of it and are ready to switch to raw goats milk. I have been giving her the goats milk for 2 days now, just the goats milk not the recipe you have given. is that okay? or do you recommend doing the recipe? she seems to not mind it. she is getting a little constipated from it do you recommend anything for the constipation? I give her vitamin c and works wonders. Also do you recommend a specific liver brand that I should be giving her? Thank you for your time!
